Jambu Press/ Studio Saraswati seeks poems 

for a special anthology project:

A FEATHER FLOATING on the WATER

poems for our children

A unique anthology of poetry for elementary age children in San Francisco by poets who live and/or work in the city. Copies of the book will be distributed to San Francisco elementary schools free of charge. The vision of the book is to offer our children the opportunity to know the work of poets who live among them—empowering our children to understand that poetry is a vibrant art form, and one vital to our humanity. Contributors will be considered to participate in a subsequent teaching program centered on poetry literacy in collaboration with a San Francisco arts and education organization. All proceeds from sales of additional copies of the book will benefit  the project in its entirety.

GUIDELINES:

1. Must currently live and/or work in San Francisco (and have done so for at least two years at time of submission).

2. Must be willing to forgo a contributors copy due to the nature of the project (copies will be available at cost to contributors). 

3. Submit no more than 5 pages of recent, unpublished poetry (one poem per page) appropriate for elementary age readers (grades K-5). We especially seek shorter poems that embrace San Francisco and its environs. Possible themes are: Our City, Neighborhoods, Family, Animals, Nature, School, Food, Diversity, the Arts, Celebrations, and Feelings.

4. Bilingual submissions encouraged . . . please include an English translation.

5. Email submissions (highly preferred) must be made as attachments in BOTH .doc and .pdf (for line break integrity). Please include a 3 line bio in the body of your email with your name as you would want it to appear in print, and a brief statement about why you wish to be a part of this project. Write “Feather” on the subject line. At the opening of the recent San Francisco International Poetry Festival, 

Mayor Ed Lee announced to the crowd that with all his official duties 

he had no time to read poetry. 

                                        NO TIME FOR POETRY? 

Around the world, leaders value poetry, and provide better examples 

of creative literacy to children. No wonder the Mayor has such 

little regard for the spirit and principles of the Occupy movement.

OUR CAMPAIGN: Please purchase a copy of Occupy SF—poems from the movement to be placed in the hands of city officials for the “Give Mayor Ed Lee an Occupy Book Report” program (this is your perk). Since this is funded by members of the public for the enlightenment and literacy of their own trusted public servants, government officials will be expected to read the book, select favorite poems, and publicly comment on how they plan to address the concerns so artfully expressed throughout the book.

             ALL proceeds from sales of books benefit Occupy.

  

We will hold a public event before the November elections where city officials can personally share their book reports or provide emails to be read by contributors to the anthology.

The recently released anthology Occupy SF—poems from the movement is a powerfully diverse, intergenerational collection of poetry and art in the bold spirit of the Occupy movement. Unique and inspiring with positive San Francisco flair, the anthology has been receiving rave reviews for its humanistic call for social change. With over 70 poets and artists, including three former San Francisco poet laureates (Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jack Hirschman, and devorah major), as well as renowned activist poster artists Chuck Sperry, Ron Donovan, and Jon-Paul Bail, the book has powerfully captured the Occupy movement as it evolves and shifts.

In celebration of Cinco de Mayo and freedom for all, contributing poets Francisco X. Bobby and Virginia

I am happy to see this wonderful anthology
of poets. It is so beautifully produced
and speaks to our goodness,
our humanity, not to the shrill side
of protest as much as to the redemption
we find in understanding not just the 'crimes'
of the elite, but of their shortcomings.
This collection gives voice to our connection
with the land and its people.  I am pleased,
in this regard, that my poem on the land
follows my old friend and mentor L.
Ferlinghetti as a keynote for this gathering.

I prefer to think in terms of leading others
to a better sense of themselves,rather than
tearing them to shreds. This was the call
of Martin Luther King, of Nelson Mandala,
and of M .k. Gandhi before them.
